This business was
started by a young
Vermont Midwife,
Kimberly Krans, who
passed away suddenly and
tragically in 2005. She
began serving the needs
of homebirth families
and midwives in Vermont
in addition to growing
her own midwifery
practice. She was a
shining, glowing young
woman who is sorely
missed in our
community. Please read
the "Tribute to
Kimberly" written by her
close friend, mentor and
colleague, Melissa Deas,
LM, CPM to learn more
about Kimberly.

My name is Heather
Whitley. I am working
toward a Masters of
Midwifery degree from
Midwives College of
Utah where I also
consult to the Board of
Directors since 2005. I hold a finance
degree and worked for
six years in a Wall
Street profession until
2006, when I became
brave enough to decide
that I was born to work
within the birth
community.

|
I have three young
children, the older ones
love to help pack our
birthkits! My first was
born in a hospital with
a CNM, my second- at
home under water, and my
third- at home weighing
over 10 lbs (I’m only
5’2” and petite). I
have experienced three
very different midwives
and have learned from
each of them a little
about birth and life.
|
|
When Kim passed, I
humbly offered to take
over the birth kit
operation to ensure
homebirth families
continued to have a
local option to source
their supplies. I
donated much of the
proceeds back to the
Vermont Midwives
Alliance.

My financial background
enabled me to look at
this little cottage
business and identify
that it had potential to
be taken to a bigger
cottage business with a little
creativity and
perseverance. My intent
is to keep that “cottage
feel” and keep inventory
inline with traditional
midwifery, while having
the capability of
serving midwives and
families across
geographic lines in a
professional way.
True to our Vermont
heritage, we are
environmentalists and
social activists.
We make great attempts
to source products from
like-minded vendors
while reducing our own
waste and operating in a
low-impact way. We
support local businesses
whenever possible to
strengthen our community
and are continuing to
move toward greater
environmental
stewardship. We
have always incorporated
recycled boxes to ship
product and we recently began to
compost our shredded
paper waste.

I am thankful to
Kimberly, her family,
and the Vermont Midwives
who allowed me to accept
this blessing and task.

Please feel free to
contact me with any
thoughts or suggestions
on how to further
develop the
midwifery mercantile
experience. |
